Krall Is At A Stall...
We found A1A - Jimmy Buffett Tribute's program to be a bit dull, bordering on stale, sorry to say. Fans who have followed her everywhere throughout the Bay Area for the past twelve years, from Monterey to Sonoma, Concord, Oakland, Saratoga, San Francisco, and back again several times over, felt Wednesday night's performance at Davies Symphony Hall was a huge disappointment. "The bloom appeared to be leaving the rose..."
It was difficult at times to understand her words with her head down and singing fast, almost like a mumble. Too many fast, boring "ho-hum" songs that were basically upbeat. Prefer Krall singing the torch songs. If she has to sing upbeat, sing a "Love me like a man" or a "Stop This World." Hope her best performances aren't behind her, with constant chit-chat about her husband and family. Couldn't shake the feeling that Krall is losing her "oompf" and becoming more of a house frau. Perish the thought!
Her statements about President Obama being more excited about her husband being Elvis Costello than meeting her in person were very hard to believe. Felt her self-deprecating remarks about her own "greatness" were not believable. When it comes to being impressed with Costello or Krall, Krall wins every time.
She was so exciting to watch before, sizzled. Afraid husband and new family might have eliminated the sexy performances she was good at. It seems she's been told that having a family now precludes her "Peel me a grape" persona of yesteryear. We are happy she has found love with her husband and family, but want to let her know that her personal life and professional performances are best separate.
She should continue to be alluring and sexy in delivering her lyrics. Let's all go on that romantic journey together as she sings her songs. Joked about being a "lounge act" on an Alaskan cruise in her twilight years, felt like a dress rehearsal for that lounge act that evening.
The need for mixing both fast and slow songs is understood, but it's the selections that are boring. Four to five good songs out of twenty-five don't justify the prices being charged. It's about the feeling you get from listening to her sing. She truly was great, now just good. There's a difference, and it saddens us.
Her penchant for traveling the world in a whirlwind manner while touring is starting to show its toll. Better to travel less and perform well with an exciting setlist than to travel the world with a mediocre program.
Looks like the hassles of attempting to buy tickets at various venues in the Bay Area are over. We couldn't get enough of her and her songs, but it appears the day has arrived that we have.
